The UN will resume "as soon as possible" distribution of humanitarian supplies to the war-stricken people of Gaza, after it received assurances from Israel over the safety for workers of the world body. The UN will resume suspended aid distribution for thousands of Palestinians "as soon as possible" as we have received credible security assurances from "the very highest levels" in Israel, the UN said in a statement.

The operations were suspended Wednesday following an Israeli attack that killed a UN contract driver and injured a second despite receiving Israeli clearance. "The UN now received credible assurances that security of UN personnel, installations and humanitarian operations would be fully respected, including undertakings of improved liaison and more effective internal coordination within the Israeli Defence Forces," the UN said.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), had suspended food delivery to 750,000 Palestinians following the death of a UN truck driver transporting supplies. "It's very good news we've received these assurances," UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told a briefing.

Speaking via video link from Gaza, UNRWA Director of Operations John Ging said it was a "horrendous decision" he had had to make to suspend delivery operations when hundreds of thousands of Gazans are in dire need of food, water and other essentials. But he had to balance it with the safety of UN workers.

South Africa's ANC moves left in election pledge

South Africa's ruling ANC vowed on Saturday to create jobs, improve education and health and fight crime in a shift to the left at the launch of its manifesto before this year's parliamentary election.

Party leader Jacob Zuma told thousands of supporters in the coastal town of East London that the ANC manifesto would focus on five areas: job creation, health, education, food security and rural development, and fighting corruption and crime.

"The creation of decent work is at the centre of all our economic policies. We will put in place a comprehensive state-led industrial policy that will direct public and private investment to support employment creation and broader economic transformation," he said.

The pledge to use government intervention more to fight poverty and secure jobs was welcomed by the ANC's leftist allies -- the labour federation COSATU and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

"The SACP supports the ANC manifesto .... (because) it commits the ANC government to develop an industrial strategy that focuses on energy and food sovereignty and security, on jobs and not profits as the key priority," the party said in a statement.

But investors fear the left might pressure an ANC government to ditch policies that helped spur nearly a decade of growth in Africa's biggest economy.

UPHOLD PRINCIPLES

The ANC has ruled South Africa with a large majority since the end of apartheid in 1994, but is facing a challenge from the Congress of the People (COPE), a party of loyalists to former President Thabo Mbeki that broke away from the ANC last year.

COPE, led by former Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota, has not released its election programme, but it has signalled that it will adopt centrist, pro-business policies similar to those pursued by Mbeki during his nine years in office.

Although COPE would be hard pressed to defeat the ANC, the new party could gain enough black votes to deny it an absolute parliamentary majority at the election due in around April.

Former President Nelson Mandela, who has distanced himself from political life, did not attend the launch but urged the party in a statement to uphold its principles.

"We once more look to the ANC to provide leadership in creating the circumstances for our people to enjoy the democratic rights for which we all fought so bravely and with so much sacrifice," local media reported him as saying.

Zuma said the ANC would work towards introducing a free education for the poor at undergraduate level, would fight illiteracy and invest in improving the quality of schooling.

The party leader said the ANC would also try to introduce a national health insurance scheme, to be phased in over five years, and would invest in information and prevention to halve the rate of new AIDS infections.

Zuma said his party would step up measures to fight corruption and transform the criminal justice system.

A South African court will hand down a judgment on Monday on an appeal by prosecutors against a decision to throw out bribery, fraud and other charges against Zuma.

Re-opening the case could hurt the ANC president's image and almost certainly overlap with his campaign for the presidency.

This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. India rejoiced Saturday at joining an elite club by planting its flag on the moon as the country s space agency released the first pictures of the cratered surface taken by its maiden lunar mission. A probe sent late Friday from the orbiting mother spacecraft took pictures and gathered other data India needs for a future moon landing as it plummeted to a crash-landing at the moon s south pole, said Indian Space Research Organization spokesman B.R. Guruprasad.

The box-shaped probe was painted with India s saffron, white and green flag, sparking celebrations in the country that is striving to become a world power. The tricolor has landed, the Hindustan Times said in a banner headline, while The Asian Age proclaimed India is big cheese.

As India s economy has boomed in recent years, it has sought to convert its newfound wealth built on the nation s high-tech sector into political and military clout. The moon mission comes just months after it finalized a deal with the United States that recognizes India as a nuclear power, and leaders hope the mission will further enhance its prestige.

This momentous achievement shall be etched in the history of India as a grateful tribute to our scientific community for their resolute efforts to take India to a global leadership position, said Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party. To date only the U.S., Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and China and now India have sent missions to the moon.

But while the celebrations conjured up images akin to that of the U.S. flag unfurled on the moon by Apollo astronauts, India s flag is most likely scattered over a wide swath of the moon s Shackleton crater after the probe slammed into the surface at more than 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) per hour. The violent landing was planned and Indian scientists hope to study the images and data sent back by the probe during its 25-minute descent to prepare for a future soft landing, Guruprasad told The Associated Press.

It carried a video imaging system, a radar altimeter and a mass spectrometer. The video imaging system took pictures of the moon s surface, while the altimeter measured the rate of descent of the probe and the mass spectrometer studied the extremely thin lunar atmosphere.

Guruprasad said the pictures that were released were raw images and that scientists had not yet analyzed the information sent by the probe. It was the first stage of a two-year mission aimed at measuring not only the surface of the moon, but what lies beneath.

The probe was one of 11 payloads on the spacecraft Chandrayaan-1. Chandrayaan means moon craft in ancient Sanskrit.

India plans to follow the mission by landing a rover on the moon in 2011 and, eventually, with a manned space program, though this has not been authorized yet.

Microsoft's Windows Live aims to be hub for Web

Microsoft said on Wednesday its next release of Windows Live online services will integrate e-mail, instant messaging, photos and Web applications from other companies into a single platform.

Microsoft aims to position Windows Live with its widely-used e-mail and messaging services as the hub for a growing number of Internet applications and incorporate new features similar to those found on popular social networks.

The strategy puts Microsoft into competition with social networking sites Facebook and News MySpace, which started to open their fast-growing websites to outside software developers last year.

The new Windows Live service plans to feature a main profile page that updates users to their friends' activities within Windows Live and on more than 50 outside Web services including Yahoo Inc's Flickr photo site and career-oriented social networking site LinkedIn.

"It's a race to see who will work better and faster with everyone else," said Charlene Li, founder of consulting company Altimeter Group. "It's the recognition that you can't be an island of yourself."

Microsoft said Web users are overrun with accounts at multiple Internet sites, each requiring a password and each with a different set of friends. Its goal is to simplify the Web lives of its users who go to Microsoft's Windows Live e-mail or instant messaging accounts.

The company's Windows Live strategy is also central to its plans to wrestle away online advertising revenue from Google, which has used its dominant search engine to expand into e-mail, online word processing and other businesses that compete directly with Microsoft.

Microsoft plans to roll out the new Windows Live services, which will include a revamped e-mail, calendar and a new photo application, in the United States over the coming weeks and then make it available in 54 countries early next year.

FILL IN THE SEAMS

In this third major release of Microsoft's Windows Live services, Microsoft said it aims to fill in the seams between its different Web services to create a unified experience.

Brian Hall, general manager of Windows Live, pointed to Microsoft's Outlook application, which brought together e-mail, calendar and contacts programs into a single integrated software suite, as a model for how it wanted to tie together a loose network of Web services.

He also noted that the latest Windows Live release is focused on creating a more polished user experience, which, in the past, may have been sacrificed in order to get new programs out quicker.

Other new services include an online movie maker program, a "groups" service that allows a group of users to create a joint calendar, share photos and documents or chat together online. Microsoft also plans to increase the size of its free storage service to 25 gigabytes from 20 GB.

Microsoft boasts more than 460 million Windows Live users and analysts said the goal for the company is to keep that audience in front of the company's websites for as long as possible and to prevent defection to other Web destinations.

"I don't think Microsoft is going to steal a whole lot of eyeballs from Facebook or MySpace," said David Card, research director at Forrester.

Facebook has 120 million active users and many of those rely on its mail and chat applications to communicate with friends instead of traditional e-mail and messaging services offered by Microsoft and Yahoo.

Microsoft and Facebook are pursuing the same strategy, according to analysts, albeit from different sides and areas of strengths. Last year, Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6 per cent stake in privately-held Facebook.

Next Gen lasers and photovoltaics come closer to reality

Washington, Nov 14 (ANI): A team of American researchers has moved a step closer to realising much advanced technology for satellite communications and solar power generation by finding a way to slow down the cooling of electrons in nanocrystals, which can lead to more efficient photovoltaic devices.

University of Chicago researchers claim that they have successfully induced electrons in the nanocrystals of semiconductors to cool more slowly by forcing them into a smaller volume, something that was first theorized in 1990.

"Slowing down the cooling of these electrons-in this case, by more than 30 times-could lead to a better infrared laser source," said Philippe Guyot-Sionnest, Professor of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Chicago.

"This, in turn, could be used to increase the bandwidth of communication satellites, allowing for faster connections," Guyot-Sionnest added.

He added the slow cooling of electrons in nanocrystals could lead to better, more efficient photovoltaic devices.

"This is because proposals to devise ways to extract the excess heat from these electrons as they cool are more likely to be realized-and to work-due to the fact that we now understand better what is going on with these nanocrystals," Guyot-Sionnest said.

Slow electron cooling in nanocrystals occurs because forcing the electrons into a smaller volume leads them to oscillate between their alternate extremes within a very short period of time.

The electrons in the nanocrystals used in this experiment oscillated so fast that it became difficult for them to drag along the more sluggish vibrations of the nuclei. As a result, the energy stayed with the electrons for a longer period of time.

The slower cooling effect was difficult to induce and observe because several different mechanisms for energy loss interfered with the process.

By eliminating these other mechanisms, the researchers were able to induce and observe slower electron cooling in nanocrystals.

Pak says it'll consider any US proposal on Kashmir

Islamabad, Nov 13 (PTI) Apparently bouyed by US President-elect Barack Obama's offer to play a role in finding a solution to the Kashmir problem, Pakistan today said it was ready to consider any constructive proposal from Washington to address the vexed issue with India. "Sooner this dispute is resolved the better off the region would be," Foreign Office Spokesman Muhammad Sadiq told reporters here.

He was replying to a question on Kashmir with reference to Obama's offer to help resolve the issue during an interview to a US magazine while campaigning for the November 4 Presidential polls. Sadiq said Pakistan was ready to look into any constructive proposal from the United States to resolve the vexed issue -- whether bilaterally, through a multilateral organisation or third party mediation.

He said Pakistan looks forward to continued constructive engagement with India to address all outstanding issues and achieve mutually beneficial cooperative relationship. Replying to a question about Chenab river flow, the Foreign Office Spokesman said Pakistan was pursuing the matter with India at technical, diplomatic and political levels.

He said Indian leadership has affirmed its commitment to the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty and hoped that New Delhi would resolve the issue at the earliest in accordance with the accord and in the spirit of promoting good neighbourly relations. To another question, he said the prisoners issue between Pakistan and India was a humanitarian matter.

Captain Kevin Pietersen took his hat off to India's batsmen after they had demolished England's bowling on Friday before reminding his beaten team that there were still six matches in the one-day series to go.

Yuvraj Singh (138 not out) struck the second fastest one-day century by an Indian as the hosts posted a massive 387 for five before England folded for 229 in the first one-day international.

"One game down, yes we are 1-nil down," Pietersen told a news conference.

"But there's still six games left in the series and we are going to have to be mentally strong to try and come back in to hit India hard on Monday at Indore.

"There is always concern when you lose. You just have to bounce back, the boys are pretty tight as a unit and I want the guys to get back and fire on all cylinders on Monday."

Opener Virender Sehwag made a dashing 85 and set the pace with a 127-run opening wicket stand with Gautam Gambhir (51) before Yuvraj's blitz.

"When you get Yuvraj Singh playing like that, Gambhir and Sehwag starting the innings off like that, I mean, you are behind it," said Pietersen, who top-scored with 63 in his team's total.

"After 30-40 overs, then Yuvraj spends 10 overs slogging to all parts. He batted absolutely, fantastically well.

"There is a lot more positives to talk about theirs, and ours we just have to look at stuff, speak about it and then hopefully get things right from Monday."

England's poor batting form continued following the Stanford Twenty20 Challenge humiliation in the Caribbean where they were bowled out for 99, but Pietersen did not want to blame the defeat on the team's preparation.

"We are not going to moan, not going to complain, we are not going to cry about it. We are going to keep our heads up, chins up, and make sure that we give it a good go on Monday because there are six games left."

Pietersen stood by his decision to bowl first on a batting pitch.

"I was speaking to (India captain Mahendra Singh) Dhoni after the game and we said that probably if anything was to happen it would have happened the first thing this morning. Unfortunately it only happened for three balls."

Rajini's ROBO

After the mega-success of Sivaji, The Boss, superstar Rajinikanth is now all set for his next film tentatively titled, Robo. Industry sources have confirmed to CNN-IBN that director Sankar and Rajinikanth have finalised their deal for Robo.The movie is expected to take the southern superstar beyond the Vindhyas for it will be made in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. Sivaji too is presently being dubbed in Hindi and sources say the success of Sivaji in the north Indian market has inspired plans for a simultaneous Hindi version for Robo. Sources also say that Robo will be bigger and more expensive than Sivaji, which was made at a cost of close to Rs 80 crore and earned nearly Rs 100 crore.
